FAQ's
What Is Your Dog Feeding Philosophy?
Our philosophy is simple; feed in a way as close to species as possible that time, effort, knowledge and budget will allow. Always incorporate good ingredients and avoid poor or unnecessary ingredients. Feeding your dog based on their individual lifestyle, environment and health and always as part of a healthy balanced lifestyle.
Where Do You Source Your Ingredients From?
At Hunter's Raw and Supplements we have produced and sourced our products from all over the European Union, although the majority are sourced from the UK from safe and sustainable sources. We believe our selection of ingredients will benefit your dog and they will enjoy their raw food.
Do You Add Any Maize, Wheat or Gluten?
We know from research and experience that many dogs suffer from allergies so we do not add maize, wheat or gluten to any of our products.
Do You Add Any Fillers?
Dogs need a balanced and complete diet to live healthy. Our products contain protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water. We do use a little rice, vegetables and oils but do not consider these to be fillers since they are key to a healthy balanced diet. All of our products and the ingredients we use add to the completeness and balance.
Is Your Food Expensive?
The quality of the food and its ingredients are nearly always proportional to the the price, what you buy is what you get. Typically, cheaper dog food will not be the healthiest choice of food for your dog and are often bulked with fillers. Our food is not overpriced but it is high quality so you should be prepared to spend a little more for this.
Should I Be Concerned About Higher Protein Levels?
Often we are advised that high protein foods could damage a dog's growth, particularly when they are young. Some of our foods do contain higher levels of protein, however we believe this is very important to your dog's growth and health. There is little evidence to support the theory that high protein levels can hinder a dog's health, as such it is our belief that high protein diets and healthy balanced diets can help them develop well.Eggs, muscle and organ meats are the most complete and the most digestible sources of protein, we include these as main ingredients in our food.
Does Your Food Contain BHA or BHT?
No, it does not. BHA and BHT are chemical preservatives that some studies suggest may cause health issues such as cancer. These are usually added to food to stop it from spoiling and extend it's shelf life. Many producers still use it and it is quite common in cheaper dog food. All of our food is fresh and immediately frozen so we ensure that it contains no preservatives, no artificial additions and is 100% natural.
Does Your Food Contain Derivatives?
No, we list all the ingredients included in our food. Derivatives are used to describe a mix or unknown mix of ingredients, for example; animal derivatives usually means the species source or animal part is unknown. We list every product used in our food right down to the percentage.
Do You Cater For Large Breed Diet?
The main consideration when thinking about a large dog's needs vs a small one, is the amount of calories it needs to function. A small dog will need approximately twice the calories to a giant breed per day. You can control this through portion size and feeding frequency.
Generally, you will not find large breed foods that are low in calories and as a result your dog may become obese if you feed it too much to compensate. The key difference for large breed food is often the additions of glucosamine, MSM and chondroitin, unfortunately, you would need to feed your dog a lot of these to give it the nutrients it requires. We prefer to supplement glucosamine and other joint health needs rather than rely on feeding a large amount of food.
Do You Cater For A Senior Diet?
The basis of a senior diet is that as a dog gets older, it becomes less active and therefore needs a less energy-dense diet to meet its needs. However, by feeding an energy-dense diet to a senior dog, it will become less active and obese, perhaps creating other healthy issues in the future.
We believe that a senior dog still requires the goodness and nutrients of regular food, so recommend our 100% natural raw dog food controlled with portion size and frequency to ensure your dog can still continue to live a healthy life.
Feeding Guidance
The Straight Swap
Keep it simple. A straight swap method works for 99% of dogs. Feed your dog the last meal of their old food the night before, leave it 12 hours and then switch to 100% raw the following morning.
Phased feeding
You might also consider a transition, 99% of dogs will transition smoothly with a straight swap, however for some dogs, with sensitive stomachs or health dispositions, a phased approach over 4 days may be better as you gradually introduce 100% raw food to them.
All daily feeding prices are calculated based on a order of 12KG box, our standard size of our Raw Food products. If you have any specific questions about your dog, contact us here.
